Agate with Druzy Quartz: Banded Chalcedony, Crystal Cavities & Display Value
Agate is banded chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz. When cavities remain open during formation, later quartz crystals can line those spaces and create sparkling druzy interiors.
Banding tells part of the story
Agate bands form through repeated silica deposition. Differences in impurities and growth conditions can create contrasting layers of cream, gray, brown, gold and other tones.
Druzy adds a second texture
Where a cavity remains, tiny quartz crystals may grow across the open surface. That contrast between smooth banded chalcedony and glittering crystal texture is one reason agate slices are so popular for display.
