How to Clean Calcite Safely Without Etching the Crystal
Calcite needs more caution than quartz. It is relatively soft, has perfect cleavage and reacts readily with acids, so aggressive cleaning can permanently dull or etch a specimen.
Start with the least invasive method
Use a soft brush or gentle air removal for loose dust. Avoid hard bristles that can scratch crystal faces.
Use water carefully
Plain water may be suitable for some specimens, but matrix and associated minerals should be identified first. Do not soak a specimen simply because the main mineral is calcite.
Avoid acids
Even weak acids can attack calcite. Vinegar and stronger acid-based cleaners can etch crystal surfaces and alter luster.
Protect natural coatings and associations
Iron staining, goethite, quartz and other associated minerals may be part of the specimen’s collector character rather than dirt to remove.
