How to Clean Quartz Crystals Safely Without Ruining the Specimen

Quartz itself is relatively hard and chemically durable, but a quartz specimen may contain softer matrix, calcite, iron oxides or other associated minerals that react very differently to cleaning.

Start dry

A soft brush and gentle air removal can be enough for loose dust. Avoid aggressive scrubbing around delicate terminations.

Use water only when appropriate

Plain water and mild soap can work for many quartz specimens, but only when the matrix and associated minerals are known to tolerate moisture.

Do not jump straight to acids or strong chemicals

Chemical cleaning can remove natural coatings, attack associated minerals or create hazards. Iron-stain removal in particular should not be attempted blindly.

Preserve geological character

Not every stain or coating should be removed. Natural iron oxides, chlorite and other surface minerals can be part of the specimen’s identity.
