How to Store Fragile Mineral Specimens Without Damaging Crystals

Mineral specimens can be tougher than they look or much more fragile than expected. A hard mineral may still have delicate crystal terminations, unstable matrix or perfect cleavage.

Avoid crystal-to-crystal contact

Store specimens so projecting crystals cannot strike another piece when drawers or cases are moved.

Support the matrix

Lift larger specimens from stable matrix rather than gripping exposed crystals. Heavy cabinet pieces need a level, secure base.

Control dust

Closed cabinets reduce the need for frequent cleaning, which is useful for delicate or water-sensitive minerals.

Keep labels with the specimen

Locality and provenance information can be difficult or impossible to reconstruct once separated from a piece.

Special materials need special care

Some minerals are light-sensitive, water-sensitive, soft, toxic or prone to cleavage. Identify the specimen before choosing a cleaning or storage routine.
