What to Do With an Inherited Rock and Mineral Collection

An inherited mineral collection can look overwhelming because the value is often hidden in labels, locality notes and old boxes rather than obvious price tags.

Do not separate labels from specimens

Original mine names, localities, collector labels and dates may carry important provenance. Keep every label with the specimen it accompanied.

Photograph before reorganizing

Take overview and close-up photos of shelves, boxes and labels before moving everything. That can preserve associations that are easy to lose later.

Sort by confidence

Create groups such as clearly identified, likely identified and unknown. Avoid permanently relabeling uncertain material.

Do not clean everything

Cleaning can damage soft, soluble or historically important material. Dusty does not automatically mean dirty.

Evaluate the collection as a whole

Locality groups, old labels and coherent collections can sometimes matter more than isolated specimens.
