Mineral Specimen Sizes: Thumbnail, Miniature, Small Cabinet & Cabinet Explained

Mineral collectors often use size categories such as thumbnail, miniature and cabinet, but the terms are not perfectly standardized. They are best treated as practical collecting conventions rather than rigid scientific measurements.

Thumbnail specimens

Thumbnail pieces are compact specimens intended to fit in a small display box. Collectors often value them for sharp crystal form, rarity or locality packed into a small footprint.

Miniatures

Miniatures are larger than thumbnails but still easy to hold and display in tight cases. This size often balances crystal detail with stronger visual presence.

Small cabinet and cabinet pieces

Cabinet specimens are designed to command more display space. Larger pieces can show more of the host matrix, crystal relationships and overall geology.

Why size is not the same as value

A tiny rare crystal can be more valuable than a large common cluster. Condition, locality, rarity, aesthetics and provenance still matter.
