What Is Druzy? Tiny Quartz and Calcite Crystals Explained
Druzy describes a surface covered with many small crystals. It is a texture, not a mineral species. Quartz and calcite are two common minerals that can form sparkling druzy coatings.
How druzy forms
When mineral-rich fluids enter a cavity or fracture, many small crystals can nucleate across the available surface instead of forming a few large crystals.
Druzy quartz
Agate cavities often contain tiny quartz crystals, producing a sparkling center surrounded by banded chalcedony.
Druzy calcite
Septarian nodules and hydrothermal cavities can also host fine calcite crystals, creating a different luster and crystal geometry.
Collector appeal
Even crystal coverage, strong sparkle, contrasting matrix and intact cavities can make druzy specimens especially attractive.
