A striking 4.1 oz (approximately 116 g) laboratory-grown bismuth crystal cluster with architectural, stair-stepped hopper formations and brilliant metallic iridescence. Numerous square, terraced crystals rise from a sparkling base, flashing steel-blue, teal, silver, bronze and gold as the light changes. Each sharp geometric form is created by the controlled cooling and crystallization of molten bismuth metal.

How Bismuth Crystals Form

Bismuth is a naturally occurring element, but large iridescent hopper clusters like this are usually produced by melting refined bismuth and letting it cool under controlled conditions. Corners and edges grow more rapidly than the centers, creating distinctive nested-square terraces. A microscopically thin surface oxide film produces its colorful light interference effects; the specimen is not naturally excavated rock.

Traditional Metaphysical Associations

Folklore only, not scientific evidence: Bismuth is associated with transformation, creative thinking and adaptability.

Care

Handle with care: crystal edges can be sharp and delicate. Keep dry, do not scrub or polish the oxide colors, and avoid high heat. Display away from small children.
